Divergence Study, IB Connection, AB (ER2) Playback Scale, FXCM

December 7 , 2005

@Ensign_HA: Welcome to class today

Divergence Study Additions

16:32 @Ensign_HA: Last week there was an interest in having flags for use in a DYO that were set by the Divergence study. The 12-07 Beta version can be downloaded that has that request implemented. The divergence is seen after one bar completes after the study swing point. So the marker you can place when the Divergence flag goes true will appear to be on the 2nd bar following the swing point but the event triggered at the begining of the 2nd bar following the swing point. Let me show example

16:34 @Ensign_HA: The divegence study is putting the red and blue lines on the chart. The red ones are Regular Divergence and the blue lines are Hidden Divergence. Then the red and blue balls which show on the 2nd bar following the divergence are from a DYO which I will show next.

16:36 @Ensign_HA: Here are the current divergence flags that are implemented. The flag for Regular Divergence will be for regular at either Top or Bottom swings.

16:37 @Ensign_HA: The next 2 flags break those into separate flags, because you might want to test for Regular Divergence happening only at Highs, instead of Lows. Same implementation for the Hidden.

16:38 @Ensign_HA: THe first Hidden flag is for both types of Hidden and then separate flags for whether the Hidden is at a top or bottom swing. And the final flag is for all of the above

16:39 @Ensign_HA: While I was at it, I exposed some Study Values for Divergence which I will explain what is in the image just shown.

16:40 @Ensign_HA: The first value is the value of the study on the right side of the divergence line when Divergence flag is true.

16:40 @Ensign_HA: The 2nd value is the study value on the left side of the divergence line.

16:40 @Ensign_HA: The line on the study is drawn between these two study values.

16:41 @Ensign_HA: The 3rd entry is the Right side value - the Left side value.

16:41 @Ensign_HA: THen the 4th and 5th entries are the same right and left side values for the price for the divergence line drawn on the chart.

16:41 @Ensign_HA: Any questions about the Divergence Flags and Values? And do you have a pending need for something not yet exposed for Divergence? If so, let me know via e-mail what you think needs to be added as you try to work with these new entries.

16:42 123: Great stuff, Howard! If we don't check "Close only" will the flag be given as soon as the second bar opens?

16:42 @Ensign_HA: yes 123, with first tick of new 2nd bar

16:42 123: excellent!

16:43 @Ensign_HA: We require that the study turn to detect a peak, and that is not concluded until the completion of one bar following the peak. So bar A has the study peak, bar B is the confirmation that the study turned, bar C is the trigger event as soon as it starts (opens)

16:42 Kongfuzi: Is it possible to do this with any indicator that shows divergence?

16:44 @Ensign_HA: Yes, divergence is a very general study tool that can be used with any study (I think)

16:44 Kongfuzi: ok great, look forward to a write-up on it

16:44 @Ensign_HA: All you have to do is find the other study's data point and set it as the reference on the divergence tool and set a trigger threshold. If in doubt, use zero as the threshold.

16:44 123: Any chance of getting the flag on the close of bar B?

16:45 @Ensign_HA: 123, the close of B and the open of C are one tick apart. We do not know that B is closed until we get first time stamp tick for C

16:45 123: Thanks - shouldn't be a problem - just wondered.... :-)

16:46 @Ensign_HA: ok

IB Connection Issue

16:47 @Ensign_HA: Last week IB upgraded their TWS and changed the load parameters that are required.

16:47 @Ensign_HA: Their change kept Ensign from succeeding in loading TWS and connecting to it when TWS was not already running. The workaround was to have TWS already running. The current version of both Beta and regular Ensign have the new needed parameters so that Ensign can auto run TWS as before. Also, for IB users, the pop-up menu to refresh tick charts has a combination of menus to refresh from IB and some to refresh from DTN. That way you can leave the refresh choice on IB and yet manually refresh for more than 33 minutes by using the DTN menu selection.

16:52 Mary Yvy: great

16:50 Mary Yvy: Howard, when I download beta is it supposed to do as usual, ask to save and then do the whole set of things or it just opens? My download doesnt do anything. Just keeps in there motionless

16:52 @Ensign_HA: If it is motionless, something is not right. In my test the progress bar moves as the download proceeds. If all fails, you can try using your web browser to get it from web site and open the Beta link that way

16:52 Mary Yvy: what happens I click the beta icon, instead of just waiting?

16:53 @Ensign_HA: Mary, good clue. so you click Beta bullet, and then you click the Download button and nothing progresses on the download guage?

16:54 Mary Yvy: well it didnt download it because when I open Ensign now it says nov 10 version. So I will go to website, but somethings strange

16:55 @Ensign_HA: OK, version title plate will show 12-07-2005

16:55 rlh: nice refresh feature (saves a bunch clicks..) thx

16:55 @Ensign_HA: Welcome rlh, it was a suggested change

16:56 Mary Yvy: yes it does Howard, by the way im very happy with IB ensign

16:56 @Ensign_HA: great mary. I think it is a great solution too and the continued effort we put in for refresh will make it all the better for IB users.

16:56 Mary Yvy: I have not had any crash whatsoever and when for some bad luck electricty gets cut and computer turns off with all charts open, I just restart and thats it, I dont need to recompose and redo all charts that used to be broken with esignal

16:56 rlh: me either

AB - ER2 - Playback Scale

16:57 Kevin: On playback file the ER numbers do not show up right on the demo chart for the beta version. I do from the playback basic screen choice

16:57 @Ensign_HA: Use AB as the playback symbol and the price format for the playback AB files we post are ###.# which is correct. AB (ER2) only have one digit of decimal. Though many of you show 2 - the 2nd decimal is thus always a zero.

16:59 @Ensign_HA: kevin, show me a demo chart you consider shows the problem - tell me the steps you are taking and I will try the same

17:02 @Ensign_HA: here is my Playback Basic in progress for AB051121

7:04 @Ensign_HA: Does anyone have a question? We can do general Q&A now

KSE Exchange

17:04 @Ensign_HA: Does anyone follow the Korean Stock Exchange with IB?

17:04 MidKnight: yes, I am charting K200 and I was also wondering what support was added, because I was charting fine beforehand....

17:05 @Ensign_HA: ok midknight, are you up and running with KSE fine?

17:05 MidKnight: 17:05 MidKnight: yes, charts just fine here

17:05 Mary Yvy: thanks

17:06 @Ensign_HA: The stuff added since last week for KSE was to auto add the exchange and currency for the KSE indexes and the correct currency for stocks when the -KSE suffix is used

17:06 MidKnight: ahhh, ok - yes I typed those in Howad - thanks - gotcha

17:06 @Ensign_HA: perhaps you use the workaround to supply the currency with the symbol

17:07 MidKnight: no, I just typed in KRW in the currency

17:07 @Ensign_HA: ok midknight you did it right

17:06 MidKnight: ty

AB - ER2 - Scale cont.

17:06 Kevin: Yes it reads in three digits like yours but I cannot run my bracket trader simulator when it does that for testing purposes

17:07 @Ensign_HA: so kevin, you want to show ####.## for AB instead?

17:07 Kevin: yes need to have like that - example 672.30

17:08 @Ensign_HA: kevin, if you change the format for AB to be ###.## then it will show the quote as 67.23 instead of 627.3

17:09 Kevin: the way the price moves on the demo is in one point increments without the tenth ticks to add up to one whole point - example 674 then 675 then 676

17:10 @Ensign_HA: kevin, go change the Min Tick size to 1 instead of 10

17:10 Kevin: there is no reading of the digits from .10 to .90 not good for testing the ER - ok I will try that thanks

17:12 @Ensign_HA: use 1 as the tick entry

17:13 Kevin: so is that were it says Tick or the $/Tick window? The symbol data for ab show Tick .10 is that not correct?

17:12 @Ensign_HA: the entry gets decimal adjusted for the price format of 1 decimal, and thus it becomes .1

Divergence Study cont.

17:06 Mary Yvy: I am supposed to make the divergency work also on an macd right? It doesnt work with my macd

17:09 @Ensign_HA: yes it will mary - show my the study you want to start with and we can get the properties set right for divergence to mark it.

17:09 dblue2: check the spread mary

17:09 Randy_1: MACD Divr post - works...

17:11 @Ensign_HA: ok, 1 moment mary to set the same here

17:14 Mary Yvy: oh now it works, and why is it treshold needs to be zero?

17:14 @Ensign_HA: Mary, need to have the same multiplier of 3 on the divergence form and threshold of zero. Your oscillator goes above and below zero. We use the threshold to know which side of the curve we are looking for peaks or valleys. Above zero we look for peaks, below zero we look for valleys. If the study scale were 0..100 then the split point would be 50, above 50 look for peaks, below 50 look for valleys.

17:15 Mary Yvy: So what does treshold means?

17:16 @Ensign_HA: It is the split point and usually appropriate to just have it be midpoint of the study scale range

17:16 Mary Yvy: Thanks Howard, and now I need to apply the dyo as you did for other chart ?

17:17 @Ensign_HA: Using Stochastic as example, if the split point is 60 then we look at above 60 for peaks and Range-60 (ie below 40) for the valleys. The 40-60 range is an ignore area

AB - ER2 - scale cont.

17:18 Kevin: I tried that Howard still only reading in 1 point increment moves rather than tenths

17:18 @Ensign_HA: kevin, please show me the Setup Playback Advanced form

7:18 @Ensign_HA: go to that form, press CTRL-J keys to post picture

17:19 Kevin: you want me to change it - ok let me try that

17:19 @Buffy: 10 for minum tick

17:20 @Ensign_HA: Buffy it is 1 for the 4 digit price files

17:20 @Buffy: thanks Howard that is probably the problem for me then

17:20 @Ensign_HA: Buffy you use 10 because your files are built with 5 digits and your format is ###.## So the 10 is offset by 2 decimals to give the 0.10 price increment in the playback

17:21 @Buffy: I am playing back your files though

17:21 @Ensign_HA: then the offset is a single decimal and 1 is correct - with format of ###.#

17:22 @Buffy: now maybe can get it to work tks so much

17:22 Kevin: Ok that works Thanks Howard

PAC Volume Rainbow Charts

17:19 MidKnight: when you have a moment Howard, I have a suggestion on the volume rainbow

17:19 @Ensign_HA: ok midknight, ask about rainbow

17:20 MidKnight: it is such a great tool but it is rather dominating on the chart because of the many colours it uses and their brightness. Would it be possible to have some sort of brightness control, such as a slider or something like that?

17:22 @Ensign_HA: 1 moment midknight

17:22 MidKnight: no rush - I got all day :)

7:23 Mary Yvy: Howard, those values they have to be on the same DYO or do I need two ? (asks the dummy)

17:24 @Ensign_HA: midknight, on the rainbow form, uncheck the Solid Flame box and that will dim it down to 1/3 brightness

17:24 MidKnight: yes, i'm doing that Howard. I just thought there might be a more configurable approach - I love it though, great tool

Symbol Property Window Changing

17:22 Ticks: Regarding request for sending you "sequence" --- Howard what do you want me to send. (Problem of changes when downloading new beta versions). The problem I am having is that the record, symbol properties, times are all being changed on beta from one download to another...Not changing from regular to beta but beta to beta...

17:25 @Ensign_HA: OK, ticks, what I need is for you to show me one of your settings from before and from after the download - the sequence I like is for you to give the details of the steps taken for your example

17:25 MidKnight: I had some symbol props change as well on last upgrade - not all, but some - roll dates changed for me on a couple currencies

17:25 Ticks: That will be hard to do now -- since I changed them all manually.

17:26 @Ensign_HA: such as --- you opened this chart, pressed these keys, made these changes, closed, etc. With the sequence of steps I should be able to see the same issue by my doing your steps. Where the challenge comes from, and this is a general suggestion to all, is that too often an issue is reported, with few details, and I try my steps and find all works as intended, and then I am left to guess at what the user may have done differently to get the effect they see. So details are needed, the more the better.

17:26 Ticks: k will try and do that and send you email, but the records change.

17:27 @Buffy: change by using arrows and not typing the change in - typed changes don't take in some of the windows

17:28 @Ensign_HA: good point buffy - typed changes are not acceptable entries in some windows because the paramter that gets stored is the index on the selection list of choices. It is an index (integer) parameter, and not the text itself. The text is just a convenient visual of what the choices are.

17:28 christophe: Howard, do you think it is going to be possible to implement a study/tool for automated fib time projection please ? thx for searching confluence of fib time projections -sorry thx!

17:29 @Ensign_HA: christophe, you already have some automation as part of the Pesavento Patterns tool that perhaps you were unaware of - that tool can give you auto fibs for the last three swings. The fib extention draw tool will not be automated because it is a draw tool and draw tools typically do not have any update to them once put on a chart.

17:30 christophe: you mean fib time projection from the fib ruler ?

17:30 Ticks: use the cycle tool and expand it to the right and it will give you time projections...

17:31 christophe: sorry I meant time projection from the fib ruler (following feature request email discussion)

17:32 @Ensign_HA: christophe, that ruler automation will have to wait for the brainstorm I am thinking on.

17:31 @Ensign_HA: I do have some thing else in mind, however, related to auto fib stuff that I will wait to talk about after it is almost done being implemented.

17:31 123: Howard... I've been playing with building new "signal filters" with divergence flags during class and it's looking good. Will post before / after chart when I get it looking right, but before you go, wanted to say... Thanks!!!!

17:31 @Ensign_HA: great 123

17:32 Ticks: Any estimate Howard when the beta will become the "regular"???

17:32 @Ensign_HA: ticks I am comfortable with beta being regular now - just waiting to see if there is or is not a real issue with market hour changes and a couple here think they can show me a pending issue still needing to be addressed. My list is caught up of intended changes

17:32 christophe: ok, thank you Howard, let me know how I can help! thx

17:32 Ticks: great

17:32 Mary Yvy: well, have a good night everyone

17:33 Mary Yvy: thanks Howard

17:33 Ticks: thanks Howard

17:33 Ticks: Hurry :-)

FXCM

17:33 MidKnight: Howard, is the 'internet data source' a future feature? or should this do something in the current beta? I am referring to the data tab

17:33 Rice: Some time ago you mentioned working on using FXCM as a data feed. Is this idea still active? No hurry, but might consider changing forex broker....

17:34 @Ensign_HA: on the fxcm, we farmed that project out to a cracker jack programmer, and initially he did alot, but then lost interest and we are concerned who is going to maintain it. So our current thought is for Mike at software support to redo the project so my staff can maintain the code and forget the initial start done by the outside programmer. So, fxcm was at one time supposed to be done this past fall, and it is still not done to my liking and looks like we will start over again for the sake of maintainability

17:35 Ticks: Meta trader data is also being used via DDE by other software vendors

17:36 MidKnight: FXCM has huge backfill for forex - that would be a great addition IMHO

17:36 Rice: so it'll be a while, but still in the pipe. great.

17:36 @Ensign_HA: thanks for attending today - sorry I have to run

17:36 @Buffy: thanks Howard

17:36 Ticks: thanks Howard

17:36 MidKnight: see ya Howard, thank you

17:36 christophe: thank you Howard

17:36 christophe: good night Buffy and everyone!

17:36 @Ensign_HA: I work with a group of scouts and they have their meeting at 4 each Wednesday and that is why I keep having to leave earlier than I used to on Wed.

17:36 dblue: thanks Howard

17:37 Ticks: good Scouting...

17:37 Rice: go help them Be Prepared ;-)

17:37 MidKnight: roast some marshmellows :)

17:37 @Buffy: :-)

17:37 @Ensign_HA: If it would work better, we could consider moving this class to a different day of the week if we need ti to run longer than 70 minutes.

17:37 Ticks: yes

17:37 christophe: ;-)

17:37 Rice: another day would be fine with me.

17:38 @Ensign_HA: ok, have a good week

17:38 @Buffy: Tues?

17:38 @Buffy: u 2 Howard

17:38 @Ensign_HA: bye
